Opinion:
Medtronic is currently moving lower today, after reporting earnings before the market opened this morning. This is weird, due to the fact that they were able to beat estimates on all metrics except the margins. The main thing being credited to the fall in price is that adjusted profit and dales declined. It has been a trend for the company for a little time, as they are seeing metrics decrease compared to numbers they used to have. I think it may be a little bit of an overreaction, the earnings seemed to be fine, and the margins seem pretty solid in my opinion. As far as valuation goes, the P/E ratio is at 23.54 which is far below the industry average, which is in the 40's. For P/S the ratio is 3.76, which is also below the industry average of 5. For profitability measures, I would like to see ROA and ROE increase a little bit, just for comfort. The growth seems to dip next year, but then picks up to an average of 5% a year. In terms of cash and debt, the debt outweighs the cash, but the current ratio is 1.87. This means it shouldn't be too much of a concern. In my opinion, I am not a big fan of healthcare stocks. Medtronic is definitely a more established business. I just think they need to figure out why sales are falling and get back on track to the better earnings days. I think it is undervalued, so if you have aspirations to purchase this stock, you have a pretty good chance here. I am going to stay out of this one, but keep a close eye to see what adjustments are made.
